The Meherrin Regional Library System is proud to present the 1,000 Things Before Kindergarten Program! The concept is simple, the rewards last a lifetime!

Reading helps assist in brain development and can create fun memories between you and your child. The idea of 1,000 Things is to add the five basics of early childhood parenting by tracking each book and activity completed with your child. The five basics are:

1. Maximize love, manage stress
2. Talk, sing, and point
3. Count, group, and compare
4. Explore through movement and play
5. Read and discuss stories

How to get started:

1. Register: Sign up at either the Richardson or Brunswick Library and pick up the program materials at the library. You will receive a folder which will include suggestions of activities to complete with your child. You can also register online.
2. Track Your Reading and Activities: For each book read or activity completed simply color in one of the bubbles on your log. Find activity suggestions and ideas.
3. 100-Book Milestones: Each time you complete 100 Things, return your log to the library. Logs can be returned at the library or emailed to mrlsweb@gmail.com. You will be given a new reading log for your next 100 Things. For each 100 Things completed, you will receive a free book! Download a printable reading log. 
4. 1,000 Things: You did it! Come celebrate at the library and receive a certificate for your achievement.

This program is free and open to children from birth until the child enters Kindergarten.

This program is funded by The Institute of Museum and Library services and the Library of Virginia.

The Dolly Parton Imagination Library sends age appropriate, free books to registered children, once a month, regardless of household income.
